The Regional Arts Commission (RAC) presents WITH NOT FOR: Art and Archeology from Alumni of the Community Arts Training (CAT) Institute. As the Community Arts Training (CAT) Institute at the Regional Arts Commission of St. Louis celebrates eighteen years, we want to showcase, document, and amplify the process of how the network of CAT Institute graduates work within communities with art as the common language. We envision this as a living, breathing exhibition that includes past and current community-based arts programs and projects with CAT Institute alums and their community partners. Through visual work and a series of performances, we are mapping our connections and multiple layers of experiences; exhibiting some of the artifacts, archeology and anthropology of arts-based community development projects and programs; and speaking out loud our manifesto of the powerful intersections of community and art.

WITH NOT FOR hones into a few words a key principle of the CAT Institute. In the field of arts-based community development, the most potent work is that in which we are not doing things for people in our communities but working with them - side by side - to create the better world we wish to live in together.

Since it began in 1997, the Community Arts Training (CAT) Institute is an innovative, cross-sector program, centered on the belief that art can amplify the voices of communities, act as a key factor in regenerating neighborhoods and is an agent for positive social change. It provides comprehensive cross-training for artists of all disciplines, social service providers, community activists, educators, and policy-makers to develop partnerships for successful arts-based programs that impact communities.
