Monique Bourgeois was a 21-year old nursing student when, in 1941, she answered an ad placed by Henri Matisse looking for a “young and pretty night nurse.” From this humble beginning grew the little known and tender relationship between one of the twentieth century’s greatest artists and Monique (who became Souer Jacques-Marie), the woman who inspired Matisse to create what he proclaimed the masterpiece of his life’s work: The Chapel of the Rosary in the French Mediterranean village of Vence. “One of the great love affairs of art history” (Philadelphia Inquirer) A World Premiere from the Midnight Company, directed by Ellie Schwetye, based on the documentary film written and directed by Barbara F. Freed.
