Black in the Abstract: Meditations on Black Artists Working with Abstraction from the 1950s to the Present

This talk considers the history of black artists working in abstraction beginning in the 1950s to the present. In this mediation, Cassel Oliver considers how artists have engaged in abstract painting as an act of resistance, as a marker of identity, as narrative, and as innovative form. Supported by a grant from the Trio Foundation of St. Louis. American Sign Language interpretation will be provided for this lecture.
