First Friday: FYI Mending Clinic
August 5, 2022
The Foundry Art Centre proudly presents the next installment of its First Friday Series, August 5th, 5-8pm. Join on the First Friday of each month and celebrate the arts. The Foundry will be open for extended hours through 8pm for visitors to spend time in the galleries, meet resident studio artists, engage with the community, and enjoy a wide array of art programming, entertainment, and special events.
Lisa Hinrichs and Argaman&Defiance will host a DIY Mending Clinic in which visitors are encouraged to bring their worn out jeans or other clothing in need of repairs and then be guided on how they can repair their clothing in creative ways, extending the life of their pieces and bring attention to the cost of “fast fashion” on the environment and global community. Guests are also encouraged to wear patched and mended clothing to the “party,” with prizes going to the most mended and most colorfully mended pieces of clothing. The DIY Mending Clinic is free and open to all.
Don’t have anything to mend? Don’t worry – take a stroll through the galleries and then create miniature dress prints inspired by Amy Firestone Rosen’s exhibition, Rethinking the Party Dress. No print experience required.
Sue Giannotti’s exhibition Echoes & Silence continues in the Ameristar Gallery. The intimately scaled works invite the viewer to come closer, discover surprises hidden within and to see how the work changes when viewed from different angles and in bright and low lighting. Even in near darkness, the reflection of the pieces shifts to reveal new aspects. As a special experience for First Friday, viewers will have the chance to see Sue’s work in a new light – literally. Echoes & Silence will be shown exclusively by candlelight and natural light – the only way mosaics were viewed until 150 years ago!
Rethinking the Party Dress and STLxSTC will be on view in the main galleries, continuing through September 23rd. Echoes & Silence will be on view in the Ameristar Gallery through August 27th.
The Foundry bar will have a variety of offerings including a signature themed cocktail, and the soundtrack will round out the night, artfully curated by the Foundry’s in-house music team.
