Flood Plain is pleased to present the first solo exhibition of St. Louis-based interdisciplinary artist Kiki Salem. THE FINE LINES BETWEEN A SIMULATION AND ASSIMILATION channels Salem’s childhood experiences growing up between occupied Palestine and the American Midwest, “being (at) the meeting point of two worlds.” Reflecting on the cultural beliefs and practices she absorbed through her American upbringing, the works in THE FINE LINES investigate Salem’s experience of, and emotional responses to, the contradictions inherent to cultural assimilation–to existing, as she puts it, “as the versus” in a cultural struggle often reductively posed as “East vs. West.” Refusing to accept such overly simplistic frameworks, Salem’s work grapples with the ways in which socially agreed upon illusions shape one’s lived experience in the world, generating “normalized colonial dystopian simulations” that individuals are expected to accept as reality but whose status as ‘real’ is anything but stable.
