Our 2017 Mainstage Arts and Music Program is “Masters of Kathakali”. Kathakali means story telling by way of dance and music, in
Indian language. Kathakali originated over 1500 years ago in South India. It is one of the 8 major classical dance forms of India. It is
a stylized classical Indian dance-drama noted for the attractive make-up of characters, elaborate costumes, detailed gestures and
well-defined body movements presented in tune with the anchor playback music and complementary percussion. The actors wear elaborate makeup and costumes which by itself could take several hours. They typically retell stories from
mythologies and epics. According to tradition there are 101 classical Kathakali stories, though less than a third of these are
commonly staged at present. It has developed over the years with improved looks, refined gestures and added themes besides
more ornate singing and precise drumming. Kathakali artists spends years in perfecting the art.
