Opening September 14, 6-9 pm
The dissolution or dispersion of self: one is a poem that invites this experience through highly attuned perception and connection, the other a dream that balks at a self-dissolution through surreal shock and dislocation. In art making, this experience can be a generative force; it is arguably the genesis of every impulse for expression. It exists before any wrangling of signature style or distillation into a body of work, and it may reappear many times in an artist’s process. It is a force that initiates a self-building, taking the form of uncertain sketches or scribblings which may never be fully realized – that’s not their purpose. The works in this show are aspects of this phenomenon as experienced by seven individuals.
