“Remembering Leonard Bernstein” Orchestrating Diversity Winter Concert

Orchestrating Diversity: El Sistema St. Louis announces their annual winter concert, “Remembering Leonard Bernstein (a tribute on the 100th anniversary of the birth of the conductor, composer, author, and educator). The Urban Youth Orchestra will premiere a Suite composed for them on four songs from West Side Story. They will also perform the El Sistema standard Mambo (also from West Side Story).

The first half of the concert will be a recreation of Bernstein’s 1964 Young People’s Concert: What is Sonata Form?. Using the narrative presented by Bernstein, the orchestra, assisted by the students in JUMP (the Junior Urban Music Program), will perform and explain parts of Mozart’s Symphony 41, Prokofiev’s Classical Symphony and popular songs to teach about this important musical structure.

Orchestrating Diversity is a stand-alone program dedicated to effecting social change by providing orchestral music education to all area youth, especially those from underserved communities
