Sarah Knight & The Brewster Kaleidoscope Society

The Foundry Art Centre is proud to announce the opening of two new exhibitions: Sarah Knight’s Crystal Queer and The Brewster Kaleidoscope Society’s Kaleidoscope, The Art Form.

Kaleidoscopes, The Art Form presents the wide variety of contemporary kaleidoscopes and kaleidoscope-inspired work created by artists from across the globe. The Brewster Kaleidoscope Society is a multi-national member group of artists who design and create kaleidoscopes, the galleries and shops that sell kaleidoscopes, and the collectors and museums that appreciate and enjoy them. Founded in 1986 by the late Cozy Baker, the international organization is named after the inventor of the kaleidoscope, Sir David Brewster. Its mission is to share and promote the beauty, creativity, and joy kaleidoscopes bring to the world.

Kaleidoscopes, The Art Form is a juried exhibition open to all artists working in all media, and coincides with the Society’s annual expo. An awards reception will take place as part of the expo on May 13th.

Sarah Knight (they/them) is an artist living in Saint Louis, Missouri. They grew up in California and graduated with their MFA from Washington University in Saint Louis in 2020. Their work expresses their experiences by creating ambiguous ceramic and stone sculptures that foster a more fluid understanding of identity. Using both made and found objects, Knight explores the assumption of artifice as deception and natural as innate by creating sculptures that embody both.

In their exhibition Crystal Queer, Sarah reimagines the definition of queering as a disorientation of visual and conceptual cohesion. The accumulation of fragments, quotes, and definitions aims to create a space of perpetual flux and transmutation in meaning and reinterpretation. Using the ceramic process of “fluxing” as metaphor and physical object, the artist intends this space to embody the joy in the unidentifiable and the alchemical transformation of matter, language, and identity.

An opening reception for all exhibitions will be held on Friday, April 1st, from 5-8pm, as part of the Foundry Art Centre’s First Fridays. Exhibitions will be open through May 13.
