Spells of the Sea

The world premiere of Spells of the Sea comes to The Grandel from Feb. 5 to March 5.
Finley Frankfurter, a 15-year-old fisherwoman, is, unfortunately, terrible at fishing. H.S. Crank, a grumpy old lighthouse keeper, has been sitting in the dark for 20 years. Together, this unlikely pair begins an adventure through the ocean to find the “Elixir of Life,” an elusive remedy that will save Finley’s father from a mysterious illness. On their journey, they encounter mermaids and pirates, whirlpools and their worst fears. Finally, they discover a new understanding of the meaning of family, friendship and self-efficacy.
Guinevere “Gwenny” Govea began Spells of the Sea in quarantined isolation and, with Anna Pickett, developed it into a podcast during the COVID-19 pandemic. Now, the unique tale takes on a new shape in this world premiere.
The stage production is presented by the Metro Theatre Company by special arrangement with Megan Ann Rasmussen Productions. Inspired by the intelligence and emotional wisdom of young people, Metro Theatre Company creates professional theater, fosters inclusive community and nurtures meaningful learning through the arts.
