The Immigrant – The New Jewish Theatre

The setting is rural central Texas, circa 1909. A young Russian-Jewish immigrant, who has recently arrived at the port of Galveston, pulls his banana cart into the hamlet of Hamilton. Fleeing the vicious pogroms of his homeland, he has sought refuge in the land of the free.

Able to speak only Yiddish, alone amid a staunchly Christian community, he begs for shelter. Taken in by a local couple, over the next 30 years, he makes a home and raises a family in this tiny town.

This play by Mark Harelik tells the true story of Haskell Harelik, “the Immigrant,” where one religion meets another, one culture meets another, fear meets fear and love meets love.

Presented by The New Jewish Theatre, The Immigrant runs from Oct. 12 to 29. Get your tickets today!
