The Saint Louis Chamber Chorus: We Will Remember Them
Coming hard on the heels of Halloween, All Souls Day and Veterans’ Day, the Chamber Chorus pauses to remember those who have gone before us and to give thanks for their legacy. The ultimate musical tribute in this genre is the ethereal “Requiem” by the French master, Gabriel Fauré, and this the Chorus will perform in an early version (1893) made for organ and grand piano that is ideally suited to the Sanctuary of Third Baptist Church which boasts one of St. Louis’s largest pipe organs and a new Steinway ‘concert grand’. Complementing the Requiem will be five works of remembrance drawn from five centuries: these include a motet sung at the funeral mass for King Philip II of Spain, a penitential psalm by Maurice Greene (a contemporary of Handel), and two rapturous anthems by Mendelssohn & Brahms. Finally, the Chorus gives the first performance of a “A Spiritual Musick” (sic) by British composer, Sasha Johnson Manning, that was commissioned by the late John Clayton, a popular radio host on KFUO classical radio, in celebration & thanksgiving for his wife, Jill, a longtime member of the choir. Sharing this tribute to John will be members of St. Louis Classical Guitar, for whom John worked tirelessly over many years.
