The Jazz Edge, Inc. and Don and Heide Wolff Jazz Institute and Art Gallery present a musical tribute to legendary composer, arranger and jazz trombonist James Louis “J.J.” Johnson.
Join The Jazz Edge Orchestra and its Special Guests: Steve Turre (Saturday Night Live Band trombonist and jazz trombone educator at Julliard), Steve Davis (Hartt School of Music’s jazz trombone educator), and Andre Hayward (Wynton Marsalis’ band member, and former Butler School of Music jazz trombone professor) to learn the importance of what Johnson did for the trombone as one of the first to embrace bebop.
From the mid 50s – 80s, Johnson actively contributed to the jazz music movement. In 1970, Quincy Jones convinced Johnson to move from NY to California to compose for cinema and TV.
St. Louis vocalists Marsha Evans and Ron Wilkinson emcee and sing a variety of selections, while informing the audience throughout The Jazz Edge’s signature educational, slide presentation and awards ceremony!
