St. Louis – May 8, 2014 – The Regional Arts Commission (RAC), the largest annual funder of the arts in the St. Louis region, has awarded 186 grants this year, totaling more than $3.4 million to support nonprofit arts and cultural organizations, consortiums, and arts programming in the St. Louis area. Since its inception in 1985, RAC has awarded more than 6,300 grants totaling over $84 million to support nonprofit arts, individual artists, cultural organizations, consortiums and programs.
“We are extremely pleased to provide this level of funding to arts and cultural organizations throughout the region. This investment in art and culture contributes greatly to the economic vibrancy of the region. With a total economic impact of the arts exceeding $582 million, we know we are making good, solid investments for sustainable economic growth and the revitalization of the St. Louis region. The arts provide a landscape that is exciting, accessible and diverse, offering quality experiences that can be enjoyed by everyone,” stated Michael Scully, chairman of RAC.
“For nearly 30 years, arts and cultural organizations in St. Louis have been able to count on our financial support, allowing them to thrive and grow. We are extremely pleased to announce an increase in the 2014 grants round from last year. This is due in part to increased revenues from the hotel/motel occupancy tax which funds our organization,” said Jill McGuire, executive director of RAC.
Each grant request is carefully reviewed and discussed in an open, public forum by citizen panels, staff members and the commissioners who contribute many long hours to evaluation and assessment. RAC instituted a ranking system several years ago to enhance and improve the panelist review process which is based on criteria including: quality of programs, innovative ideas, fiscal health, cultural diversity, local/regional impact, community outreach, management capability and need in the community.
The grant recipients represent the breadth and diversity of arts and culture in St. Louis, both in size and scope, from large institutions such as Opera Theatre of St. Louis and the St. Louis Black Repertory Theatre to smaller organizations and programs such as Lemp Neighborhood Arts Center and the Missouri Immigrant & Refugee Advocates program.
