Robert Burns had no connection to Washington University, but he was the favorite poet of many of the trustees, who formed the Burns Club of St. Louis. The heroic, 8-foot-high bronze statue was erected under the auspices of the Burns Club on the occasion of Burns’ 170th birthday.
