About
Joie de Vivre, which means “joy of living” in French, was done in 1927 at a time when the sculptor was changing from his early cubist style to a more impressionist and abstract approach. The bronze, one of seven casts of the form, suggests a figure in ribbon-like contours. The inspiration for the piece came from Lipchitz’s sister, who had a serious illness. He hoped that the joyful vibrancy of the work would help her hold on to life.
