About
Based out of Beijing, Zhu Wei’s art is inherently political. The figures of China China bow in unison and wear matching suits. By giving his figures a cartoon-like appearance, Zhu Wei lightheartedly mocks the all too common practice of obeying without confrontation. He takes it even further by casting them in bronze and thus memorializing this satire of Chinese culture.

Zhu Wei is the world’s most renowned contemporary Chinese ink painter and most important explorer. He is also among the very first group of distinguished contemporary Chinese artists recognized by the international art audience in the 1990s. Among the vast group of contemporary Chinese artists, Zhu Wei is one of the very few who chooses to use a traditional ink painting technique to depict the social scenes in modern China. His paintings make up for an area that has often been overlooked in contemporary Chinese art, art that has local painting elements. His effort in research improves the chances of contemporary art to be relevant in China and makes it a substantial phenomenon. It allows the world to see paintings with authentic Eastern origins, to read its contemporary values, its thoughts, and above all, its power.
