About

Ernst Gorsemann, a Lutheran, visited the St. Louis campus in 1952 while the new library was in the planning stages. He was impressed with the architectural beauty of the campus and offered his sculpture of St. Michael at no expense other than transportation costs from Switzerland, where it had been stored for safekeeping during World War II. The offer was not formally accepted at the time. Several years later, Concordia Seminary’s president visited the artist’s home in Germany where the offer was renewed and arrangements were made for shipping.
