The Regional Arts Commission Announces
2016 Artist Fellowships
10 ARTISTS – $200,000 INVESTMENT
St. Louis (December 7, 2016) – The Regional Arts Commission of St. Louis (RAC) has awarded fellowships at $20,000 each to ten local artists totaling $200,000 as part of its annual round of Artist Fellowships. This is the fourth year that RAC has offered the Artist Fellowships.
The fellowships will allow for the development of the individual artist’s career, providing the necessary time and space to study, reflect, experiment, explore and create. These awards are not grants in the traditional sense but “fellowships” in terms of a financial endowment or investment in the careers of St. Louis artists. The RAC Artist Fellowship program is among the few multi-disciplinary fellowship programs of its kind in the United States.
The Artists Count survey conducted in 2012 by RAC and funded by the Kresge Foundation determined that one of the most pressing needs for regional artists is to receive financial support in order to pursue their art form and further their artistic careers. This finding supports RAC’s commitment to providing a financial investment in the form of artist fellowships and artist support grants that are awarded annually to St. Louis area artists.
“Supporting individual artists is necessary to growing and sustaining the arts and cultural vibrancy of our region. By annually providing the artist fellowships to ten local artists, we recognize their individual artistic accomplishments, provide significant financial support to further their careers, and develop a cohort of artist fellows that will continue to directly impact and build St. Louis into a more creative and economically thriving community,” said Felicia Shaw, executive director of RAC.
The recipients, representing the disciplines of visual arts, theater, music, literature, craft and media arts, were selected from among 212 applicants after being reviewed by RAC Commissioners, a community advisory committee, 26 expert readers, and staff.
