Coral Courts Lecture: Fernanda Canales

Join us Monday, February 19, at 5:30 p.m. for a free public lecture with architect Fernanda Canales.

Canales is an architect based in Mexico City committed to design, urban planning, and research. She holds a doctoral degree in architecture from the Escuela Técnica Superior de Arquitectura de Madrid, a master’s degree from the Universidad Politécnica de Cataluña in Barcelona, and a bachelor’s degree from Universidad Iberoamericana in Mexico City. Canales has been distinguished with several international awards, such as the Emerging Voices Award from The Architectural League of New York. Her practice was named one of the world’s 100+ Best Architecture Firms by Domus and was recognized by The New York Times as one of the 10 female figures changing the landscape of leadership in the world.

Canales is the author of books “Shared Structures,” “Private Space,” “Architecture in Mexico 1900-2010,” “Mi casa, tu ciudad,” and “Vivienda Colectiva en México.” Her work has been exhibited at The Royal Academy of Arts in London, the IFA Gallery in Stuttgart, and the Venice Biennale, among other institutions. She has been a visiting faculty member at the Politecnico di Milano, Harvard University, Princeton University, and Yale University, as well as a guest speaker at MIT, the Architectural Association in London, Columbia University, and the University of Edinburgh.

Canales has published more than 100 essays in specialized magazines such as AA Files, El Croquis, The Architectural Review, Perspecta, Baumeister, Bawelt, Arquitectura Viva, and Domus. She has been awarded with the Graham Foundation Research Grant, the Career Award, and the Best Young Architect Award in Mexico (Colegio de Arquitectos de México), and the fellowship of the National System of Creators in Mexico (Fondo Nacional para la Cultura y las Artes). She has been nominated for the Marcus Prize, The Royal Academy Dorfman Award, the Swiss Award, and the Iakov Chernokov Prize.

This event is part of the Sam Fox School’s Public Lecture Series and is free and open to the public. The lecture will take place in Steinberg Hall.

Free parking is available in the East End Garage beginning at 5:00 p.m. Enter the garage from Forsyth Boulevard or Forest Park Parkway.
