About the artist:
Dale Eldred
1933-1993
Sculptor Dale Eldred is best known for his large-scale works that utilize both natural and artificial light. In 1959, Eldred was appointed chairman of the Kansas City Art Institute’s sculpture department, and proceeded to serve for 33 years as an inspirational role model and mentor for countless students. He also served as the artistic director of Biosphere II, and was awarded a fellowship by the Massachusetts Institute of Technology Center for Advanced Visual Studies. As his career developed, Eldred transitioned from clay to steel, wood, and other unique materials to create large sculptures and environments. His pieces were often inspired by natural phenomena, and he was known for incorporating mirrors, pigments, gas flames, fluorescent paint, refraction tape, neon tubes, and glass to create light effects.
