Pohlman / Knowles, Jordan Scott Gaunce, & Aya Mori

Duane Reed Gallery is pleased to announce its latest show, featuring glass duo Sabrina Pohlman and Sabrina Knowles, St. Louis illustrator Jordan Scott Gaunce, and Japanese ceramicist Aya Mori.

Pohlman and Knowles began their collaboration in 1992, beginning a body of work including hot-sculpted glass, various metal works, found objects and beads. Drawing inspiration from an extensive list of international scholar visits, they use their experience to create sculptures that embody mythological stories in glass. In their latest work, the pair adapts their story-telling practice to an assemblage of modular wall hangings, conveying snapshots of their signature narrative details. Jordan Scott Gaunce combines painting and drawing to repeat geometric forms revealing the complexity of seemingly simple materials. Inspired by South Western culture and landscape, Gaunce’s sleek graphic forms draw attention to details like the vibration between two colors, the reflection of light on acrylic, or the grain of his wooden base. Aya Mori is a Japanese-born and trained ceramicist, transforming wheel-thrown pots into complex sculptures. The artist’s traditional rounded bases are exaggerated through her process of adding, subtracting, and blending new elements: slicing planes, adding walls, and laying clusters of ceramic pedals. a student of Harumi Nakashima, Mori’s forms blend traditional ceramics and the man made products of craft with the untethered organic forms of nature.
