As part of the Clayton Art Commission’s goal to “add to Clayton’s unique character and make public art intrinsic to community life,” the commission has installed several public art benches throughout the City. Deer Bench is a playful “love seat” with two does wrapping around to face each other in the middle.

About the artist:
Catharine Magel
Magel received her Masters in Fine Arts in 1982 from New York State College of Ceramics at Alfred University, and her Bachelors in Fine Arts in 1979 from Kansas City Art Institute. Over the course of her career, she has been the recipient of several awards, including a National Endowment for the Arts Fellowship Grant and a Connecticut Commission of the Arts Grant. In 1991, Magel joined the USA Scenic Artists Union, and cultivated a unique aesthetic that incorporates painting and sculpting in large-scale ceramic and mosaic pieces. She works mainly in ceramic tile, mosaic, glass, carved brick, and fiberglass. In designing and fabricating her work, Magel attests to becoming part of a movement of people participating in social change and revitalization of a place.
