Ruckstull made the statue of Mercury (with nudity tactfully hidden by a flowing cloth) teasing an oversized Eagle of Jupiter as an entry for an art exhibition. After the exhibition, it was purchased by the Portland Place Associates for the grassway on their private street.

Frederick Ruckstull

Artist Bio: 1853-1942

A toy salesman by day, Ruckstull was the first to enroll in evening art classes at Washington University. He then studied in Paris, became a member of the National Sculpture Society, and was the Chief of Sculpture for the 1904 World’s Fair.
