About
Chadwick often sculpted pairs of figures, and was interested in exploring methods of signification, especially of gender difference. This sculpture is an example of the artist’s abstract style of portraying the human form in armless geometric shapes with the female head represented as either a pyramid or diamond shape and the male head rectangular. It also features Chadwick’s use of a burnished surface to accentuate details, such as faces, against the matte finish of the rest of the sculpture.
