About
Mr. and Mrs. Howard F. Baer purchased the two reclining figures from Moore in 1961 and donated them to the St. Louis Art Museum in 1970, where they currently reside. The bronze pieces appear thick and heavy, but their smooth forms twist and bend around themselves, forming interesting negative space.

About the artist:
Henry Moore
1898-1986
Henry Moore was an English sculptor and artist born in Castleford, Yorkshire. He was best known for his semi-abstract monumental bronze sculptures that are located around the world as public works of art. He became well-known through his carved marble and larger-scale abstract cast bronze sculptures, and was instrumental in introducing a particular form of modernism to the United Kingdom. His forms are usually abstractions of the human figure, typically depicting mother-and-child or reclining figures. Moore’s works are usually suggestive of the female body and are generally pierced or contain hollow spaces, such as in Two Piece Reclining Figure No. 1 and No. 2.
